Went to the coast (Houston/Galveston) over D-day weekend. I went to the Battleship Texas (in La Porte) to visit the ship and the guys of the Battleship Texas Amateur Radio Station (BTARS: www.na5dv.org). In this video, I’m right over the officers’ wardroom where the club is transmitting while the main radio room is undergoing restoration. I felt like a kid in a toystore. The ship has a completely different presence when it has a voice! Note the 6 meter loop antenna (no, they weren’t having much luck with 6 meters) — they were also using a homemade three wire multiband longwire. I was below decks with them when they made contact with the USS LST325 (please check that ship out at www.lstmemorial.org) in Evansville, Indiana. I saw the special on the History Channel about it and the men (including WW2 vets who served on these things during the war) and their journey to bring the ship home from Greece. It was a thrill for this radio geek! Oh, my Eton E5 and Kaito KA-1103 both performed outstandingly well. If you’re ever in the Houston area, see the ship (Battleship Park in La Porte).
