I made this video as a tribute to those who served & fought on the battlefields of Vietnam. I prefer the Jimmy Webb version over that of Glenn Campbell. Jimmy Webb, in 1969, wrote “Galveston”, a song about an American soldier who pined for his hometown and his girlfriend. I consider it neither a pro-war nor anti-war song but rather one that tries to reflect some of the thoughts & images of a soldier who longs to be back at home where his memories provide him a brief sanctuary from all the death and destruction he sees all about him. I would rather consider this a tribute showing how those who served & fought in Vietnam felt. I wanted it to show their bravery, fear, anguish, compassion and sadness for the death and destruction about them and the longingness to be back home in moments of loneliness or battlefield quiet while in Vietnam. I hope I succeeded in some small way.

It is Friday of the labor day weekend, and I have driven to the far end of Galveston, Texas to a place called East Beach. There are ships, fishermen, and seagulls in the area. Also this is the weekend before Hurricane Gustav, and although New Orleans is the primary target, Galveston is in the warning area as well. This was filmed on the third anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. Also you will see I am also standing in front of a sign about it being Fort San Jacinto Historical point

The beaches of Galveston Island in Texas are the number one source of tourism for this coastal community. Hurricane Ike dumped debris on the beaches and in the surf as well as creating a large loss of sand all along the shoreline. Since the local economy is dependent on tourism, emergency re-nourishing of the beaches was needed. Restored beaches help recover the town’s tourism base and economy as well as protecting the sea wall from future storm damage.
