Oak Island Sign Dedication After Hurricane Ike

A little more than 5 months after Hurricane Ike all but wiped the little fishing community of Oak Island off the map the town continues to rebuild. With the help of Hooter’s a new sign now welcomes those who come to Oak Island. Haak Wine and Stars 5 09

So what do scientists, Saturn, and Cabernet have in common? Well if you were at Haak Winery on Friday night you would have gotten acquainted with all 3. Members from the Star Gazers from Galveston and the Johnson Space Center Astronomical Society brought out their telescopes and set them up near the vineyard. Guests, while sipping on some great Haak wines, strolled from one telescope to another to see those twinkling lights up in the sky.

Listen to Talk of the Bay, as we enjoy the evening with our star gazing friends. Look for this fun event to happen again in the fall. The Haaks serve up really good food to go along with the Wine and the Stars. Coastt Guard Pollution Response Drill

HOUSTON – Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit Galveston, with the istance of Coast Guard Buoy Tender Harry Claiborne, conducts a pollution response drill using the Vessel of Opportunity Skimming System (VOSS) in Galveston Bay, Texas.

The VOSS equipment uses a large strip of containment boom to collect oil into an area directly beside the ship, where a skimmer can be lowered to draw the oil into collection tanks on board.

The Coast Guard’s VOSS equipment is strategically pre-positioned at several locations across the country and may be transported to a spill site on a single truck or by Coast Guard C-130 aircraft. The mobile equipment is totally self-contained and capable of being used quickly and effectively aboard any available vessel.
