I personally prefer Port Aransas over Galveston. It takes about 4 hours to drive between the two. I am not sure about the water quality of either beach. I prefer Port Aransas for the beach area is better.

The water is cleaner in Port Aransas because it doesn't have any runoff from the Mississippi. Mapquest says it will take you 4.5 hrs to get there. It's a total of about 250 miles, but you have to go up towards Houston first to hop on 59 S.

Depending on the route you take, it is anywhere from 209 miles to 265 miles. If you average 60 miles an hour it will take you anywhere from just over 3 hours to 4.5 hours. and like he said, the water is definately better.
