I’ve noticed no coverage of the deaths and have also noticed the inability to get any aerial images. I’ve heard that bodies may be floating and the devastation is being covered up. Does anyone know about this?

There isn’t "plenty of media coverage".

Research it a little, the media is not being allowed into certain areas. Bolivar Peninsula, Crystal Beach and parts of Galveston are off limits. In addition, those who go into the restricted area (rescue workers, etc) are having their cameras confiscated.

Governor Perry is being pressed on why reporters are being denied access to disaster areas. Rumors are starting to leak out that the death toll is going to go much higher than the current number.

    Not enough Blacks, no looting.

But you are right, large sections of Galveston were literally leveled to the ground.

Because we are not able to play the race card like New Orleans…..so no one cares.

Unlike the people of N.O., the people of Texas are taking care of themselves and not crying to the federal government.

    Sorry…was that offensive?

Because no one screams injustice if it is mostly concerning "white" Americans. Probably not a lot of bodies anyway because they had sense enough to leave.

I suspect aLOT of People’s lives were badly damaged by what happened along the north Texas Coast. And the Authority’s DON’T want to turn the Situation into a "Media Circus" -by allowing everyone & his brother-in-law IN, to take pictures of the Devastation… I don’t think anything’s being "covered up"; I just think it being handled discretely- in respects to those who’ve lost their Homes & Livelihoods…

I think they only had like 5 deaths on Galveston Island. 50-55 total for the entire US- from Ike. Not a big story- unless you want to see a town virtually gone.
I saw news on CNN, today, about the storm and I get updates from my friends who all live in Houston. They are currently getting power back- some have had it since the weekend. The further away you go from downtown Houston- the longer it is taking. Galveston and some areas on the coast around it- were completely destroyed. Downtown Houston had many of the high rise windows blasted out. It will take a VERY long time to get these places put back together. The bodies I have heard about are actually the caskets from cemetaries- that flooded- specifically Hollywood Cemetary. More people died in Haiti & Cuba.

It might be too shocking for some eyes to see the vast obliteration of the island. It looks a lot like Haiti. Much like a third world country. I’ve seen pictures of the dead fish floating around, but no people. I guess we are not that different from Asia then, when they blocked reporters from sending pictures of the devastation from the earthquakes earlier this year. It happened when Katrina hit too. It seems those in power wish to sweep it under the table so those of us who are directly removed from this(living in other parts of the country) can quickly forget what happened. So many life-changing images came from the Katrina disaster, that Bush did not wish to revisit that time. There are people who refused to leave or were unable to leave this time too. Texas being the home state of Bush, unlike Louisiana cannot be viewed by the rest of us to look like a third world country. Soon before the hurricane hit Texas, it was portrayed as one of the wealthiest states in the union. The housing, and employment crises have pretty much bypassed Texas. Makes me wonder why.

nonsense, i am in Houston and there is plenty of coverage about Galveston on the big three networks. If someone is not getting enough coverage is Baytown, and they got hit bad by by the storm, Montgomery county is not getting enough coverage either.

I think Wade is right. My best friend told me that one of her patients, a school superintendent and disaster relief safety manager from the devastated Orange/Beaumont area told her that many, many bodies are washing up on Galveston beaches.

He said that civilian and media planes and helicopters are being told that they’ll be shot down if flying in the area. I found that somewhat hard to believe but she’s an honest person and I can’t see why he’d lie about something like that.

Apparently, it’s too horrific for the public to see until all the bodies are recovered. But you’d think missing persons would be reported if there are that many floating up.

The only thing I can think of is that maybe immigrants working from Mexico could be the victims and their families wouldn’t have a clue.

P.S. I agree with Ben and Rotor. No looting and no race card played. No one crying to CNN ‘give me, give me’ ‘What you gonna do FOR me?’

I’m a former photo/journalist. I’ve seen all that first hand. Good news is no news. You live in a community of well-mannered people and the media can’t capitalize on that.
