Due to all the destruction and devastation in Galveston we do not want to cruise with Carnival out of Galveston. However, Carnival has not cancelled the cruise which departs on Sep. 21. As a result, a Carnival representative informed us that we would forfeit our $3,000 if we cancel. Also, the insurance which we purchased would not cover us either. I think this is unethical that Carnival is still planning on sailing a cruise ship out of Galveston if the port is safe.

My daughter and her husband were booked for a Carnival cruise out of Galveston that was supposed to leave Sept 14, the day after the hurricane. I posted a similar question as yours here a few days ago. There is no way a cruise can leave from Galveston at this time. The island is basically a total loss. It’s devastating and you can’t even get in. My daughter was told the very same thing. They never even canceled that cruise! I couldn’t believe it. They didn’t purchase cruise insurance, either, because they had no plans to cancel their trip. And really, they assumed that in the event of a hurricane, the cruise line would cancel the cruise without hesitation and of course, refund their money. But that hasn’t happened. So I agree with you. I don’t think this is right at all.

How is it “unethical” if the “port is safe”?

Unless your insurance covers cancellation for “any reason” or somesuch, you won’t be covered just because you decided not to go. You might have a case if you can’t get to Galveston/Houston because the airport is not open or flights are restricted in some way, however. Unfortunately, you’ll probably also have a difficult time finding a hotel for the night before, unless you’ve already got one booked [be sure and reconfirm if you do].

Hopefully, you can make the best of things and go on your cruise and enjoy yourself. Your concerns are one of the problems with cruising during hurricane season, unfortunately.

reading the fine print before you buy the insurance seems to be a very smart idea. I would try to find a way to go on your cruise, if at all possible. That is probably because i would not want to lose the 3,000.oo i had spent. If they say the port is safe, what can you do ?
if you choose not to go you could take your case up with your states bbb
    best wishes,
