This song is one of …
This song is one of the most nuanced nods to the Vietnam war ever. “Cannons flashing” is about early morning bombardment in the Tonkin Gulf and “clean my gun” is a sly reference to self-gratification. Jimmy Webb is, was and remains a genius. And Glen Campbell had a masterful sense of what makes a great song.

I live in Dallas …
I live in Dallas now and lived in Houston back in the 80′s. I absolutely LOVE hearing this song. I can’t tell you how nice it is to “get away” to Galveston for a weekend (when a hurricane isn’t coming through) and walk the beach. I always hear this song in my head when I’m there.

Jimmy Webb wrote …
Jimmy Webb wrote this, along with may other classics, including “The Worst That Could Happen”, “Witchita Lineman”, “Up, Up and Away”, McArthor Park”, and “The Highwaymen”…..Glen’s a great talent, but so is Jimmy Webb.

From merely a vocal …
From merely a vocal standpoint, Glen Campbell’s voice was incredible. Listen to him sing Gordon Lightfoot’s “The Last Time I Saw Her” – it’s unbelievable. God do I wish I could find acoustic versions of both that song and “Galveston”, without all the strings and instrumental overlays. I just want to hear the purity of Campbell’s voice – the dude could REALLY sing.
