Im going to Texas in May to watch a soccer game in Houston (Reliant Stadium) i was thinking instead of staying in houston, maybe Galveston will be fun? its not too far right? ive never been there, but i went on their website, and i think it will be more fun then houston. am i wrong???? im also in love with 3 hotels! (just from seeing pics from the sites) the st luis, mooody gardens, and hotel galvez….. which one is the nicest???? they are all around same price, so i want the nicest room/ pool/ restaurant. do u think i should even stay in galveston? it will be me and my boyfriend’s 1st vacation without our daughter, so we want something fun!!!
Whether you think Galveston will be more fun than Houston is completely dependant on what you like to do. I love Galveston, but you’ll find people on here who hate it and think there isn’t anything to do. It’s roughly 45 minutes to an hour from Houston, btw. Out of your 3 hotel choices, I’d choose the Galvez. It’s a gorgeous, historic building. But, the rooms are too small for some people’s tastes, so keep that in mind. Also, depending on how old your daughter is, staying at Moody Gardens might be better for you. If you plan on doing all of the attractions a Moody Gardens, staying on site would cut down on a lot of travel. But, it’s not on the beach like the Galvez and the San Luis are. So, it’s completely up to you and your tastes and interests. The San Luis is probably the "nicest" and Moody Gardens is probably the most updated. All 3 hotels are great properties though, so you can’t really go wrong with any of them. Have fun if you come to Galveston. Post back if you have any questions on activities or restaurant suggestions.

I am looking to move to Galveston and was wanting some information. I have visited several times and already know that I like the area. What I would like to know is if anyone can point me to a web site that has local rental house information. I have checked the major sites and only found a few properties I know there have to be more. I know from looking at real-estate in my area that there are always local home rental companies that don’t show up so if anyone has any info it will greatly help.
Here are some local homes for rent: http://realestate.galvnews.com/for-rent/Galveston-TX-USA/REALTOR-LISTINGS-source
You can choose your criteria and look at the listings. There are a lot of rentals listed by Joe Tramonte Realty, so you can try looking on their site as well. I’m about to move out of my rental house…you can have it.
Just kidding. A lot of people just put up fliers to rent their houses too. Are you near Galveston? At UTMB and TAMUG, people just put up fliers rather than advertise in the paper. That’s how I found my house. But, there are decent ones advertised, you just might have to weed through a bunch of them. Good luck, and welcome to Galveston!!

I love the San Luis. Moody Gardens is a mini Disneyworld & the Galvez was hit pretty bad during Ike so I would check on it’s status.

As native Houstonian, I would advise you to research a bit more than normal before staying in Galveston. Hurricane Ike in 2008 was more devastating than many realize. The tourist areas are renewed, but other parts of town that include hotels and the like could still be in decay, making you a target for theft.
Staying in the southeast suburbs of Houston may be a good fit since you could make equidistant trips to both Reliant Stadium and the attractions in Galveston.

Renting a house or a condo would be a great idea, and there are a lot of choices for rentals in the Galveston area. I’m not sure how much you are looking to spend, so I would say that it’s best to do your homework and use online research to find available places to stay that fit within your budget.
Rather than give you a specific property name and location, I would suggest that you do some research on the available houses/condos, the prices and the locations. I have used justvr.com in the past and it was quite helpful for narrowing down my choices and booking a few nights stay.

Founded in Galveston in 1842 with the launch of the Daily News, the Belo Corporation entered the twenty-first century as a powerhouse conglomerate, owning four daily newspapers (including the Dallas Morning News), twenty-six television and cable stations, and over thirty interactive Web sites. The first comprehensive work to bring to life this remarkable success story, Belo blends biography with a history of corporate strategies. Drawing on company archives and private papers of key figures, including A. H. Belo and G. B. Dealey, former company archivist Judith Garrett Segura brings to life important chapters in the cultural life of Texas, from Galveston’s days as the largest and most vibrant town in the Republic of Texas, through the wars that followed statehood, periods of economic hardship, and the effects of sweeping social change. Turning points in the company’s history, such as the sale of its Galveston paper when company revenues were dramatically affected by candid reporting of Ku Klux Klan activities in the 1920s, highlight crucial elements of the press’s role in the life of a community. Segura also charts technological advances, from the telegraph and the typographers’ union to the dawn of the Information Age. Finally, she includes the most complete portrait of the Dallas Times Herald Company to date, documenting the rise and fall of Belo’s chief rival. This is a story of frontier survival and futuristic thinking, marketing genius and historic reporting, nurtured by a family of mavericks.
