I am looking for a list of coastal cities for Texas, specifically for cities or towns within about 2 to 3 hours drive from Galveston area.

I want to move away but be close enough to drive every other weekend back to Galveston.

I would like smallish towns very near the beach. That is the most important thing.

If you have any suggestions, or know an internet site that would list the cities and include information like population, housing market (rental rates) and such.

Thanks

League city, Lake Jackson, Baytown, Friendswood, Clear Lake, Houston, there are a whole lot.

My husband and I own an electrical business. He was told they are looking for electricians and such to help rebuild there. How do I find more information on this?

FEMA should be able to put you in contact with contractors who are/will be working in the area. You might also contact the power companies serving the Galveston/Houston area as they may be hiring sub contractors. Good luck to you.

And, Lise22, your "typical American" remark is uncalled for. Volunteers provide indispensable service in times of disaster and certainly should be encouraged. There are some areas, however, where professional expertise is required and providing those services for a fair price is not "making money on the backs of those who have lost everything." There are many areas that volunteers can provide services and assistance, but well meaning volunteers in some areas can cause more harm than good. Do you honestly believe that everyone of the Red Cross representatives who respond to a disaster are unpaid volunteers? If so, I have a bridge for sale cheap!

I was wondering if we have any survivors of IKE here and what part of Houston or Galveston do you reside in? Are you getting any help? We will be headed your way soon.

We left Port O’Connor and avoided any real damage.
spongebob, thats really great that is all of the damage that you suffered. There are so many homes that are totally devestated. Smart move except Humble got trashed as well.
We drove to George West and made it with no loss.

We lost our home in Allyson in the Woodlands and couldn’t find a place to live after that. So we moved back to the Florida Keys.
Caicos Turkey, yes YOU ARE a survivor, Thank God you survived a CATEGORY 4, that is awesome, some devestation, WOW
ARCHILLES, you figured that out all by yourself, what a smart young man you must be !!!!
There are 550,000 Houstonians now with electricity. I was trying to get their stories and find out what general area they are in.
I have a reason for wanting to know.

I’m a survivor, but I’ve never even been to Texas! Hurricane Ike did his worst by hitting small islands in the North Atlantic as a Category Four before deciding to head your way. Here’s a link for you to show what I mean! http://www.tcweeklynews.com/

My family is heading down to Galveston and LOVE deep sea fishing but, since we live across state, taking it home and cooking it is an issue. Are there any restaurants in Galveston that can cook our catch for us? Thanks in advance :)

I lived there for a year and never heard of anyone doing that, probably because of liability. There are plenty of beach houses you can rent to do this, but dont know of any restaurants to do this at.. Hope this helps…

we are leaving from galveston and going to cozumel and progreso, yucatan.

My boyfriend’s mom said we need one.

My mom said right now they are only required to fly.

I saw this online

CRUISE TRAVEL
The U.S. Government will soon require all of our guests (including U.S. citizens) to be in possession of a valid passport when traveling on any Carnival cruise. This requirement may become effective as early as Summer 2008.
Carnival strongly recommends that all guests travel with a valid passport during their cruise. This will enable guests to fly from the U.S. to meet their ship at the first port should they miss their scheduled embarkation; and allow guests that must debark the ship before their cruise ends to fly back to the U.S. without significant delays and complications. Additionally, it will greatly help to expedite their debark process

I would really like to save 200 bucks, but if need to buy them i will.

should i purchase them?

Best place to read all about this is the US Dept of State.

http://travel.state.gov/travel/cbpmc/cbpmc_2223.html

LAND AND SEA TRAVEL
The following summarizes information available on the Department of Homeland Security’s website.

JANUARY 31, 2008
U.S. and Canadian citizens will need to present either a WHTI-compliant document, or a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license, plus proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate. DHS also proposes to begin alternative procedures for U.S. and Canadian children at that time.

SUMMER 2008
At a later date, to be determined, the departments will implement the full requirements of the land and sea phase of WHTI. The proposed rules require most U.S. citizens entering the United States at sea or land ports of entry to have either a U.S. passport; a U.S. passport card; a trusted traveler card such as NEXUS, FAST, or SENTRI; a valid Merchant Mariner Document (MMD) when traveling in conjunction with official maritime business; or a valid U.S. Military identification card when traveling on official orders.

The implementation date will be determined based on a number of factors, including the progress of actions undertaken by the Department of Homeland Security to implement the WHTI requirements and the availability of WHTI compliant documents on both sides of the border. DHS and DOS expect the date of full WHTI implementation to be in the summer of 2008. The precise implementation date will be formally announced with at least 60 days notice.
