I LOVED Texas! I liked the friendly people, hot weather, natural beauty, active nightlife, history, culture, and so on. In particular, I liked Ft. Worth, Austin, San Antone, and Galveston. But I also enjoyed some of the smaller towns such as Ore City, Crawford, and Belton. Dallas County, on the other hand, was just okay. I'd love to live there, it's in many ways better than Kentucky (not to trash my home state, though.)
Please, don't state where you live now, b/c we know you've visited there (lol).

Texas it is my home state

I was told the ship was owned by Frank Robbins and his bride Martha Kelly(ey). They had a son, my grandfather born on ship and his birth was to be registered in Galvestion, TX because this was where he set foot on land for the first time at age 2 or 3 years old. I was told they came from Ireland, but I don't know if they stopped elsewhere first.
My grandfather would have been born on 25 of Jan. abt 1883
give or take the 2 years mentioned above.
Thanks for any help…

can you take your own booze and such, or do they allow that. Is there any prevenitive measures taken by the port authoritys in Galveston, Tx to assure drugs are not taken aboard?

They do X-ray the bags to look for weapons etc…
We did take some of our own alcohol w/o any problem.
We left out of Port Canaveral FL, sailed on RoyalCaribbean to the Western Caribbean for 7 days last May.
If you are flying,I'd say it's airport security that would be your biggest risk.
We had a fabulous time,
I wouldn't take the chance of anything ruining such a great vacation. Leave the "drugs" at home.

HOUSTON – The Coast Guard responded to a boat fire in Galveston Bay, Texas, this morning.

Coast Guard Sector Houston-Galveston received a report at 8:24 a.m. from the Houston Ship Pilots ociation that the fishing boat Captain Orlando was on fire two miles south of Eagle Point, near Red Fish Island, Texas.

Sector Houston-Galveston immediately dispatched a rescue helicopter crew from Air Station Houston, and two rescue boat crews from Station Galveston.

Upon arriving, the rescue helicopter crew discovered that two crewmembers from the Captain Orlando had been picked up by a Good Samaritan boat in the area. Station Galveston rescue boat crews then verified that no one else was in the water, and set up a 200-yard safety zone around the burning boat.

The Captain Orlando had 100 gallons of diesel fuel onboard, and there is reported to be 600-yard sheen south of Red Fish Island in the Houston Ship Channel.

Galveston
“Coming down the coastal prairie from Houston on Interstate 45, you can smell the ghosts before you can see or hear them. They smell sweet and moldy, like the unfocused memory of some lost sensation jarred unexpectedly to mind”. — from chapter one

Galveston — a small, flat island off the Texas Gulf coast — has seen some of the state’s most amazing history and fascinating people. First settled by the Karankawa Indians, long suspected of cannibalism, it was where the stranded Cabeza de Vaca came ashore in the 16th century. Pirate Jean Lafitte used it as a hideout in the early 1800s and both General Sam Houston and General James Long (with his wife, Jane, the “Mother of Texas”) stayed on its shores. More modern notable names on the island include Robert Kleberg and the Moody, Sealy and Kempner families who dominated commerce and society well into the twentieth century.

Captured by both sides during the Civil War and the scene of a devastating sea battle, the city flourished during Reconstruction and became a leading port, an exporter of grain and cotton, a terminal for two major railroads, and site of fabulous Victorian buildings — homes, hotels, the Grand Opera House, the Galveston Pavilion (first building in Texas to have electric lights). It was, writes Cartwright, “the largest, bawdiest, and most important city between New Orleans and San Francisco”.

This country’s worst natural disaster — the Galveston hurricane of 1900 — left the city in shambles, with one sixth of its population dead. But Galveston recovered. During Prohibition rum-running and bootlegging flourished; after the repeal, a variety of shady activities earned the city the nickname “The Free State ofGalveston”.

In recent years Galveston has focused on civic reform and restoration of its valuable architectural and cultural heritage. Over 500 buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places and an annual “Dickens on the Strand” festival brings thousands of tourists to the island city each December. Yet Galveston still witnesses colorful incidents and tells stories of descendants of the ruling families as Cartwright demonstrates with wry humor in a new epilogue written specially for this edition of Galveston.
